The Elizabethan Collar
Hello everyone,
A BIG Thank you to all that have called and written to check in on me after my vet appointment on Thursday! I am sorry that I haven't been able to respond as quickly as I normally would to you; I've been preoccupied with my new arch nemesis--the Elizabethan collar! But, before I elaborate on my current predicament, I'll tell you what led me here:
The appointment on Thursday (7/12) was supposed to be for a check up and my last set of vaccinations. But, they didn't give me my shots because I still had small patches on my back/neck that looked weird where hair wasn't growing. (Oh, you didn't know about the patches? I went to the vet about two weeks ago to have it checked, but they didn't know what the cause was and so they sent me on my way with an antibiotic and said not to worry. [Not sure why he prescribed an antibiotic when the cause wasn't identified.]) Well, at Thursday's check up, the patches are still there and the vet still doesn't know the cause. So, they ordered me to have a skin biopsy the very next morning. (So much for not having to worry!) I didn't really understand why I had to go for the biopsy because I felt fine. My humans were especially anxious about this procedure because of my age, so it was a long night.
On Friday everyone was up especially early, so we could arrive even before our 8 a.m. appointment time. (Didn't I tell you they were anxious!) It was early for me since I'm not used to leaving the house before 8 a.m. They wanted to stay with me during the procedure, but that wasn't allowed and then they were told they had to leave me there. Initially, I was nervous, but when I looked back at their faces when they were leaving, I just felt sad for them. But, then the nurse gave me back my favorite toy, so I got over it. I don't really remember what happened while I was under anesthesia. But, it went well or so they tell me. I woke up to lots of hugs from the staff. (They love me!) The results will be in next week.
Now, on to my new nemesis!
According to Wikipedia: An Elizabethan collar is a protective medical device worn by an animal, usually a cat or dog. Shaped like a truncated cone, its purpose is to prevent the animal from scratching a wound on its head or neck, or from licking a wound on its body.
According to Dexter: An Elizabethan collar is the most frustrating contraption known to animals@!@!
Don't get me wrong, I know I need to wear it, so I don't chew on my stitches. (Of course, if I hadn't made the mistake of already biting through the stitch at the vet, they wouldn't have put it on me. Oh well, you know what they say about hindsight...)
My humans are still worried about me. I know they're doing their best not to show it, but I can tell from their energy. I've been a little out of it (yesterday morning was rough), but I'm feeling better. I got so much extra attention at the vet (they really love me) and when I got home I was waited on hand and paw--new treats, toys, and so many kisses--so, I'm not complaining. (Well, maybe a little over that darn collar--grrrr!)

It's Dexter!
Hello and welcome to my home page. You're here, so obviously you want to know more about me.
Here goes:
I was born on March 29, 2007. My time at the breeder is pretty much a blur. I have three brothers-- I think--all the pups looked alike.
Eric and Christina adopted me on Tuesday, June 12th around 9:00 p.m. (I remember the time because it interfered with my evening play session.)
I am told that I now weigh 2.8lbs; my goal is to make it to 6 lbs, so I have a little way to go. My next vet visit is July 18th. I'm not looking forward to it because I'm due to get another shot. That will be my last for a while, though, so I suppose there is a bright side.
Well that is all for now. I'll try to keep this page updated with pics, but my schedule is very hectic these days. People don't realize just how time consuming it is to become house trained. It takes all of my energy to get my parents to understand that I'll go on the pad when I'm ready. Oh well, what can you do?
